Traditional Chinese Medicine Examined: What is TCM? - The Pain Relief Center - Hawaii

I’m often asked, “What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?” Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has deep historical roots with evidence of its curative properties that date back 4000+ years! It’s a process of healing the body using 100% natural and holistic methods such as examining the tongue, the pulse, and bodily functions to diagnose any health issues we may be having. Practitioners invigorate and balance the unseen energy pathways that run throughout the body using a variety of modalities such as:

  • Acupuncture
  • Cupping
  • Gua Sha
  • Tui Na
  • Moxabustion
  • Qi Gong Meditation
  • Qi Gong Healing
  • Herbal Medication
  • Dietary Therapy

At the heart of TCM are five fundamental theories that, over the centuries, have been carefully studied, perfected, passed down, and used to describe, diagnose and treat most ailments. These theories are:

  • Yin and Yang Theory
  • Five Elements Theory
  • Twelve Meridians
  • Zang Fu
  • Tongue and Pulse Diagnosis

But exactly how does TCM work? How does a point in the hand or foot can relieve neck or back pain? How do points on the abdomen relieve arm or leg pain? How do the hundreds of herbal formulas used in TCM help ailments from menstruation to losing those unwanted pounds?

I’ll be addressing all these questions and more in future TCM Examined blogs. Each installment will discuss one of the fundamental theories and modalities of TCM. My goal is to help you understand and appreciate the benefits of this age-old medicine, to the point where you think… “I’ve got to try this!”
